Research interests

My research interest stemmed from my desire to understand fundamental aspects of microorganisms’ adaptation to their immediate environment. These aspects include the behavioural, genetic and biochemical mechanisms in which organisms use to ‘thrive’ in, from an anthropogenic conception of, extreme environments.  I am particularly interested in extremely-/permanently- low temperature environments such as the Arctic and Antarctic hemispheres. Organisms from these environments employ a range of biochemical mechanisms to counter the effect of low temperature on their biochemical machinery.  Secondly, these organisms produce a range of interesting compounds that may be useful to industrial and/or commercial enterprises. Organisms from these environments are generally novel and uncharacterised. I have since extended my interest in characterising unknown proteins from these organisms using Bioinformatics platforms.
My most recent research interest shifted from the pure Sciences to the Social Sciences. This shift can be partially attributed to my practical involvement and constant engagement in formal learning processes. I wanted to understand the relationship between, learning and education and, schooling and training. I changed my career path and developed a vested interest in people that cannot benefit from mainstream educational initiatives. I summarise my educational interests in the following statements:

  • The philosophy of education as defined by domestic, local and international bodies.

  • Science Education as a curriculum and attitudes towards Science.

  • Epistemological and political assumptions used in the business of learning.

  • Critical theory with respect to power relations, emancipation and the development of learning programmes.

  • The notion of educational underachievement with a focus on issues of equality and diversity.

  • Technological and innovative teaching technologies and their applications in the twenty first century.
